I Want A Tub Like That

On Sunday, the boys and I were watching “Dream House” starring Daniel Craig. In the movie, there’s a scene where he’s in a bathtub which I’ve been coveting in my latest House Beautiful issue.

So I said: “That’s the kind of tub I want.” And Gabriel answered, “The kind with Daniel Craig in it?”

Very funny.

I Used to Run with Doubt. Now She Can’t Keep Up.

Today, I ran my first 10K race – the Chattahoochee Runners Club 10K. Sure, I have run 6.2 miles before, but not in a race and not with a sweet 10.35 mile PR. I’m shooting for a 9.something mile for the Peachtree. With this race, RV and I are sticking to our commitment to run in 12 races in 2012.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, we ran the Marietta Mardi Gras 5K. That race was particularly special because I was running to honor Sherry Arnold.

This beloved mother, wife and educator was abducted during an early morning run in Montana on Jan. 7. Hundreds of mother runners across the country ran in her memory that Saturday, and I am glad that I was one of them.

Hello, 2012!

I started the new year surrounded by my wonderful family, full of high hopes and aspirations and battling the flu.

Nevertheless, I have plans to accomplish great things this year – to beat my pesky medical issues, to run several 5 and 10Ks as well as a half marathon, and to grow a bit more as a human being. I want to continue on my health and wellness journey until it becomes second nature and engrained in me. I want to chill more, stress less, travel often and learn something new.

I would love to finish 2012 on the same high that ended 2011 and to proclaim again: “THIS was the best year!”

God willing.

2011: A Year of Blessings

2011 was a blessed year for the Velez family, replete with milestones and accomplishments. At a time when so many are struggling, we are humbled and grateful for being stronger, more united and better established. We are thankful for the gifts of love, health and abundance in our lives this year, and also for:

  • Katrina’s marriage to our wonderful new son, Christopher Hofius
  • Gabriel’s graduation from Johnson and Wales University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Foodservice Management and subsequent employment as Pastry Chef at Buckhead Life Group’s Nava Restaurant
  • Ramon gaining ground toward attaining his career goal of Director in the healthcare industry and solidifying his athletic self
  • surpassing my goal weight of 130 lb., becoming a bonafide trail and race runner, and ticking off another year at my beloved Happiness Factory.

We look forward to 2012 and to all the opportunities for happiness and growth that will come along with it.

God Bless everyone.

I Am a Badass Mother Runner

Finishing smack dab in the middle of the pack at the Zooma Atlanta 5K feels like quite an accomplishment since I only began running races in September. It has been a joyful and liberating experience, and I am so grateful for it.

This race was my fifth 5K and it’s time to step it up. I see a half-marathon in my future, specially after meeting my running role models this weekend. Through their Another Mother Runner blog and podcast, Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bowen Shea continuously give me the support I need to sustain my running  journey.

These are my stats and I am proud of them. For now.

Presenting Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Hofius

So much to remember, so much to be grateful for… yet I am not ready to share my feelings about the magical experience that was our children’s wedding on Saturday, Oct. 8.

I want to keep the memories to myself for now, both in my heart and in mind. Meanwhile, I will provide a sneak peek into the overwhelming beauty of this young couple. Words just wouldn’t do them justice.

She Weds This Weekend

Wedding week is officially in full swing. I worked through Tuesday and am now able to fully focus on Katrina and Christopher’s wedding.

The Hofiuses flew into Atlanta yesterday and we enjoyed a lovely dinner together at South City Kitchen Vinings. Great food, great wine, great conversation and phenomenal bonding. We are so fortunate to have so much in common with this family as it relates to values, family and salsa dancing.

We have the completed calligraphy project – escort cards, signs and menu cards. I am thrilled with Anne Elser’s work.

I am finishing assembly of the amenity baskets for guests and they will be done by the time the bride arrives.

Gaby is working diligently on the fondant dahlias and related flowers which will decorate the wedding cake. With three different flavored layers, the cake is baked. He is full-on focused on the decorative elements now and is up late each night cranking them out creating them. The cake will be assembled in Dahlonega.

Tonight, the bride arrives from DC. Top-of-mind is much needed rest for her in the next three days so she is refreshed and re-invigorated before all the events begin.

Tomorrow, Alexis flies in and our family will be complete once again. The pace will pick up at that point as we begin the round of facials, threading and manicure appointments.

Our cabin awaits us and the bridal party on Friday. It will be a treat to be surrounded by all these kids we’ve known for years and are a part of our collective memories.

The rehearsal dinner on Friday evening promises to be a treat as we further connect and integrate our families. And, the kids have something special planned… I can’t wait.

Now, for the real issue. I still don’t have the right shoes for the perfect mother-of-the bride dress. I have purchased six pair up to now and none proved sufficiently beautiful. Well, there were those Manolo Blahniks which matched perfectly… but the price is not justified. Yet.

I head back out tomorrow to continue the search.

Lax Is Not the New Lazy

Although I have been lax in posting, I have not been lax in general.

I’ve been getting out a lot to exercise. Mostly, for its stress relieving effects on everything else that’s going on – wedding planning, imminent earth shattering work deadlines, wedding planning, doctor’s appointments and wedding planning. If someone had ever told me two years ago that I would resort to physical activity to reduce stress, I would have laughed out loud and fallen off my comfy chair.

So this is how it’s been:

I am a Runner: I hadn’t thought of myself as a runner, like, ever. After all, I had only run in spurts of run/walks in the past. Yet, one recent trip to the trail I ran into (literally, of course) a large family exploring the woods. As I was approaching, the male parental unit yelled: “Runner! Step aside everybody!” I looked around and said: “Runner, where? Oh me! Well, gee, thanks for that…” and as I ran past them, the mom called out: “You ARE a runner, you’re running aren’t you?”. And you know what? Hells yeah, I AM a runner.

Fords Creek Trail: RV and I recently tried a new trail that a colleague had raved about. Initially, it seemed nice enough with gentle downhill slopes, beautifully wooded areas and the constant glimmer of the Chattahoochee River through the trees.

But man did it have tons of rocks and tree roots along the trail, and man did I make a face plant while confidently running down the steepest hill. I must have slid 2 yards with my arm outstretched above my head like a horizontal Statue of Liberty, only not so pretty. I just laid there for a good 3 minutes, terrified that I had broken my left arm from the pain that was shooting to my shoulder. Eventually, I decided that it wasn’t broken because I could actually move without screaming like a girl – which I did in 2010 when I fell running (can you detect a trend here), fracturing my right arm and tearing my rotator cuff in the process.

Four weeks later, I still have daily pain in my left shoulder with limited strenghth and range of motion, combined with a fetching dark brown 3×6″ scrape down my leg (this will look lovely with my above the knee mother of the bride dress). It should be noted that the leg scarring is only enhanced by the scar down my arm which also got thoroughly scraped. Good times.

I Killed It on a Trail Run: although I visit my beloved Thompson Trail several times a week, I had never been able to run the whole 5K course. On Sept. 22, I ran 3.1 consecutive miles – like a bunny in the forest, down and up the hills, first time ever. I cried at the end for never in my wildest dreams did I imagine being able to do this. I love my trail.

2011 KP Corporate Run 5K: as previously posted, I ran it the whole way – on asphalt, mind you – in 38:38. Not earth shattering, I know, but I ran it the WHOLE way people – on asphalt -which I  had been afraid of since the Fall of 2010. First race I pull that off – thanks to a fair, breezy Atlanta evening and a huge turnout to keep the pace going.

Next: the Emory Winship Cancer Center 5K, the Zooma Women’s 5K at Chateau Élan in Nov. and, to close out the year, the Dunwoody Jingle Jog 5K in Dec. It’s been a good year for healthy living.

Back in the Saddle Again: took up horseback riding again and was incredibly moved by how much I had missed being around these beloved creatures. Despite the dirty work – scraping hooves, brushing and wiping down equine sweat – sitting on such a powerful creature again, adapting to its gait and becoming one through mutual trust and respect is one of the most amazing experiences. I will be back regularly, but not until after the wedding. I don’t think they make gold casts to match my dress in the event I should take a nasty spill (not farfetched in my current state of clumsiness). Just sayin’.

P.S. I broke the elusive 130 lb barrier and hit 129.4 lbs on Friday, Sept. 16. What, what?

38:38

Yesterday, Sept 9, marked the anniversary of the day I decided to start moving in the hope that I could become healthier. No lofty goals at the time, no dieting, just aiming to walk a block and back.

Two years later, I am a new person and I celebrated by running the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run in downtown Atlanta, and run it I did – the entire way. Seriously.

My race times are inconsequential – finishing is the goal since I live by the saying that “slow and steady wins the race” plus i have a tendency to trip and fall (note to self: fix that). But running for 3.1 miles on asphalt is a new accomplishment and I did it in 38:38.

Today, I go back to my beloved trail for another 3.1 mile run. That’s where I did it first, the day before the Kaiser. I’m in the zone people, I’m in the zone.

Hey Body

Don’t screw with me now.

I committed to you and got you down to a fighting weight by eating healthy and exercising regularly. For crying out loud, I’ve even got you running 3 mile trails on weekends!

Ever since my surgery in April, it’s been one thing after another, what with the excruciatingly slow healing, the wound infection, and recurring skin allergies and hives. What’s with this sudden joint pain in all my extremities and the sharp knife-like pain in my side every time I take a deep breath?

Give me a break already, you’re the strongest you’ve been in 28 years. Now act like it.
